The Power of Lemons – For home, health and beauty

Lemon Power

The title of this article, The Power of Lemons, is really an understatement.  When I decided to write this article I had no idea just how powerful lemons really were.  As I did my research I realized that one article would be way too long to summarize all of the information I was gathering.  Since the power of lemons spans across all of my content and then some, I really wanted to present my readers with all of the information I could.  So,  I have decided to break this article up into four sections with this article being the introduction.   Below you will find a link in every category on Home Aide Good about lemons.  Cooking with lemons, cleaning with lemons, using lemons as medicine and a post on lemons under my newly created category, Homemade Cosmetics, which was inspired by you know what… yup, Lemons!
I played around with the idea of creating this new category some time ago.  Up until now I have categorized my homemade cosmetics posts under the Home Remedies category.  Lemons have changed the game my friends.  The recipes and tips I discovered on using lemons to beautify oneself deserves a class of its own.  Click one or click them all, but, above all, please enjoy my tribute to The Power of Lemons.

The Power of Lemons – Home Remedies

Lemons for Home Remedies

Lemons are a well rounded staple ingredient in home remedies.  The health benefits of lemons are endless.  The fruit is a well known remedy for colds and flu being naturally high in vitamin C, zinc, magnesium, potassium and calcium.  What many may not know about lemon is that it is an acidic citrus fruit which restores the pH of the body to a more alkaline state upon consumption.  It has almost zero fat and cholesterol and works with the body to lose weight faster.  The pectin fiber in lemons make it supremely beneficial for digestive and colon health.  The benefits of lemons are endless but the fruit works best when used as a preventative health measure.

How to make scented Shea butter

Shea butter is a fat extracted from the ground pit of the fruits of the Karite trees throughout west Africa. It is a creamy emollient that can be used on ones skin and hair and can even be eaten, usually as a butter added to rice.  Raw Shea butter has the appearance of hard chunks much like cocoa butter but is actually much softer and creamier. It melts as soon as you rub it in your hands or onto your body.

According to Deyale Sports Center Blog (www.deyale.com) the following are some of the benefits of Shea Butter for the skin:   Continue reading

Homemade Deodorant

I finally did it!  I successfully made my own homemade deodorant.

My journey with controlling underarm odor has been a long one.  About 20 years ago, back in college, I began to have allergic reactions to antiperspirant deodorants.  I would develop the itchiest, ugliest rash on and around my armpits within hours after using it, so I stopped.  I found a brand labeled as deodorant only, that did not have the antiperspirant (aluminum) ingredients in it.  After less than a year of using that I developed an allergy to that too, not to mention that it was not very good at controlling odor.  I switched over to the crystal which didn’t work AND caused and allergic reaction.  I tried spray on’s and expensive “natural” deodorants.  Nothing worked.  Eventually they would all cause me to have the itchy, ugly rash.  I struggled until about five years ago, when I finally found a deodorant that worked. The Miracle Remedy

Got Seasonal Allergies? You might want to try The Miracle Remedy

Taken individually, apple cider vinegar (ACV), raw honey and garlic each have wide variety of health benefits.  When combined, they give us a powerful remedy for over a dozen ailments and dis-eases.  Taken daily, The Miracle Remedy is an amazing prescription for overall good health.  The ACV eats fungi and bacteria and contains many vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and dietary fiber (including iron, calcium, copper, and potassium), while at the same time having very little fat and sodium.  Raw honey is anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal.  When sourced locally it contains local pollens and acts as a natural vaccine for seasonal allergies.  It contains protein, calcium, iron, Vitamin C, folate, choline, and potassium.  Garlic has been proven to kill harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites and contains vitamin C, B6 and selenium.

1 cup locally sourced raw honey

8 cloves of garlic, peeled

To make this tonic combine the above ingredients in your vitamix and blend on high for about 30 seconds, transfer it to a glass container, seal it and refrigerate it for five days before using.  This gives the ACV an opportunity to pickle the garlic and really marinates all of the ingredients.  When its ready, add 1 tsp to a cup of water or juice and drink.

Benefits of the Miracle Remedy

  • Balances blood sugar levels
  • Lowers cholesterol
  • Stabilizes blood pressure and lowers risk for stroke
  • Reduces risk for heart disease
  • Acts as a blood thinner
  • Treats stomach ulcers
  • Aids in digestion and regularity
  • Reduces acid reflux
  • Reduces the risk of digestive cancers
  • Kills or slows the growth of certain cancer cells
  • Helps with weight loss by making you feel full
  • Clears mucus and congestion
  • Treats coughs/upper respiratory infections
  • Helps fight the common cold and influenza
  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Eliminates seasonal allergies
  • Calms the nerves
  • Relieves pain in joints from arthritis
  • Soothes sore throats
  • Makes ticks and mosquitoes less likely to bite
  • Controls candida
  • Contains anti-oxidants

I make my family take this tonic every day.  If one of us has a cold we up the dosage and take it before bed as well, which gives the immune system an extra boost while the body is at rest during the night.  For digestive issues and weight loss this tonic can be taken before eating.

  • Do use unfiltered apple cider vinegar, the unfiltered variety has the “mother” at the bottom of the bottle
  • Do use locally sourced raw honey, which is not heated or filtered and had all of the nutrients left in tact
  • Do NOT take this tonic with cranberry juice. Garlic and cranberry juice may cause the digestive track to explode with uncomfortable gas (thank me later)
