Make Your Own Laundry Detergent

imageHow to Make Your Own Laundry Detergent

The time has come for me to make another 1 year supply of laundry detergent.  I use a mixture of the above ingredients 1 ounce at a time and save myself a lot of money.

While some may use homemade detergent alone, I use it as a supplement to my liquid laundry detergent (which I buy from Trader Joe’s). With the homemade stuff as a supplement, I feel confident about using a small amount of the store bought liquid laundry detergent and my clothes still come out super clean and smelling fresh.

Ingredients :
1 box or Borax
1 box of Super Washing Soda
64 oz Baking Soda
4-5 bars of French milled soap of your choice
1 container Oxo-Brite (optional)

imageThe soap in the picture above is Trader Joes Lavendar soap. I like French milled soap because it is not oily and it grinds into a fine dust.

1. Break soap up into manageable chunks and grind in a vitamix a few chunks at a time on high to get a fine powder

2. Combine ground soap with all the other ingredient in a dry storage container like this:

3. Mix it up well and use a 1oz scoop per load of laundry.

Final Result:

imageThis soap will not create a lot of suds if any at all and therefore it is safe for HE machines. Do not be deceived by its lack of sudsing and think you need to add more soap. Doing so will only cause you to waste product and money.

This laundry detergent recipe is really nothing new and has been floating around on the internet for quite some time now. I’d like to give credit to which is where I first discovered homemade laundry detergent. Happy Laundry Day Friends!
